What is the perineum and what does it do?

On:

Discover what the perineum is and why it is essential for your intimate health and daily comfort.

Our tips for getting to know it better and strengthening it.

What is the perineum and what does it do?

A small muscle, a big role!

We often hear about the perineum, but who really knows what it is? An “intimate muscle”? A “pelvic floor”? Just a forgotten area? If you've ever had these questions on your mind, you're far from alone!

In fact, the perineum is like our pelvis' safety net: discreet but essential.

So what exactly is it?

The perineum, or pelvic floor, is a set of muscles and tissues that enclose the lower part of our pelvis. It's a bit like a support cover for our organs: bladder, rectum, uterus (in women) and prostate (in men).

It runs from the pubic bone at the front to the coccyx at the back, and extends from hip to hip. A small, invisible, but invaluable muscular trampoline!

What's it for?

This little muscular “hammock” has several vital missions:

- To hold the pelvic organs in place. Without it, there's a risk of prolapse.

- Ensure urinary and anal continence. It closes or opens the “faucets”.

- Play a role in sexuality. A toned perineum promotes pleasure and limits certain types of pain.

- Help during childbirth. It stretches and relaxes to let baby through.

Why can it become brittle?

This “trampoline” is not unbreakable! Pregnancy, childbirth, excess weight, intense physical effort, high-impact sports, menopause... All these factors weaken muscle fibers.

The result? Bladder weakness, a feeling of heaviness, intimate pain or everyday discomfort.

How can I tell if my perineum is in good shape?

If you feel leakage when you laugh or sneeze, discomfort during intercourse, or a feeling of weight in your lower abdomen... it could be a sign that it needs a boost!

? First step? Always consult a professional: midwife, specialized physiotherapist or doctor. A simple check-up can assess tone and adapt exercises.

Our opinion at SUGAR

At SUGAR, we're campaigning for people to stop seeing the perineum as a “taboo subject”. A healthy pelvic floor means more comfort, more freedom and more self-confidence!

But remember: every body is different. Some perineas are too weak, others too contracted. A personalized diagnosis is therefore essential before starting rehabilitation on your own.

Limits to be aware of

Even if you can do a lot to preserve your perineum (exercises, biofeedback probes, physiotherapy sessions), you need to remain humble: age, certain illnesses or a history of surgery can influence the result. There is no miracle solution, but every little effort counts.

A word of advice: prevention is better than cure!

Strengthening the perineum isn't just for new mothers! Sportswomen, women before or after the menopause, men after certain operations... everyone can benefit from maintaining this discreet muscle.
